As the rampaging Nuklo threatens the worlds and kills the two mutants of the alternate universe, Surge decides to end the threat by sacrificing herself to defeat Nuklo. Surge burns herself out with her electrical energy, costing her life. The grieving Sage blames Forge for allowing his teammate/protegee to die.
X-Force v7 #5, 2024
-------
I don't know what to feel about this. Surge may have died a hero's death but since she is an X-Student (and a POC), it's disappointing when she is fridged like a C-List character. If Surge gets brought back to life (like maybe as an energy being), then it would be fine.

wolverine & the x-men was a good show, forge and toad were the BEST and most UNAPPRECIATED boys from their respective teams, and i will never forgive god for letting the show get cancelled right before the arc where they would have been teammates and friends and eventual boyfriends.

Marvel Masterworks - Uncanny X-Men vol. 10
I really like Forge XMen and #186 is a banger. Instantly my fav.
He's written very 1980s, by which I mean some concepts are fumbled and I think Claremont could've done a bit more research especially regarding Cheyenne people, but! Disabled mutant Tony Stark who's trauma and mutantness drive him to retreat from the world, who is a genius in some respects and absolutely played in others, and who is actually punished by the narrative for his dickhead actions ie. building a de-mutant-ificaton ray for the fucking United States. I think rooting him in the government rather than something like the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants is an excellent move, and characterizing him as someone who can build a Star Trek holodeck but who nonetheless is easily deceived is very solid, he's a classic 2E D&D high INT low WIS.
Maybe he's different later, but that's my bead on him as of this earliest stage, anyway.

Forge: Oh for fuck's sake, not this again! That was 35 years ago, can you get off my case? I've destroyed all trace of it anyway.

(day 72) Forge!
The neat thing about Forge, IMO, is how he avoids some of the more basic stereotypes about indigenous people. The X-Men have about five or six major Native American characters, and their heritage is often reflected in their codename and powers. Forge, on the other hand, rejected his training as a Cheyenne medicine man and chose to embrace technology rather than mysticism. We actually don’t even know his Cheyenne name, only his mutant name-- Claremont’s notes refer to him as “Daniel Lone Eagle,” and some online sources refer to him incorrectly as “Jonathan Silvercloud;” neither is canon. That sets him apart. I can’t speak on how deftly this is handled in all cases, I’m sure some Native readers would have more insight on the subject than me... but anyway that’s what I think is interesting about Forge.

Toad-ally *X-men Evolution* (Todd/Forge) Part 2
“And……done!”
Forge sat back in his chair, pleased with himself. He never thought he’d ever say this but,
“I can’t wait for school tomorrow”
The next day, it was official. Get a schedule, get introduced in class, stare at Toad, do homework.
Forge was definitely happy to see Toad’s face light up when Forge was introduced to the class.
This was one hell of a crush. After all, Forge was in beginners math! But Forge really never paid attention. Forge could literally blink and answer the question in a few seconds. And everyone seemed to be on his case.
“Why are you even in this class?”
Forge was pretty good at playing deaf or changing the subject. Forge sure as hell wasn’t going to admit he did this all for one guy. One really groovy guy who gave Forge goosebumps when they laughed.
Forge was outside with Toad during their lunch period. Forge’s heart was doing backflips and he couldn’t stop laughing or smiling and Forge saw that Toad was doing the same.
“Help me up, yo” Toad extended his hand.
Holding his hand, Forge pulled Toad off his ass. Forge pulled Toad too hard, causing them to be face to face. Forge still held Toad’s hand. Blushing he asked,
“Is there a malt shop nearby?”
“What the heck is that?”
“…….It’s a place you get ice cream, soda, and burgers……..do they not have those anymore? What kind of apocalyptic future did I return to!?”
Todd snorted as he laughed.
“Yeah, we got one of them old diners, grandpa! I’ll take ya! After school, y'now. Just calm your ass down!”
Forge was smiling.
“Neato”
Toad and Forge were eating chili fries at the diner when Forge spoke up.
“I remembered my name today”
A pause of silence.
“You gonna tell me, yo?”
“I dunno, man”
“You don’t gotta”
“But I wanna”
“Well?”
Forge took a deep breath.
“Jonathan. Jonathan Silvercloud. That was my name. Before I was Forge”
“So you saying you ain’t no more?”
“I guess so. That name doesn’t mean anything to me. It’s just……kinda dead now”
“Have ya….told anyone else?”
“No. And I’m gonna keep it that way”
They were both quiet.
“Thanks for telling me, yo. Appreciate it, y'know?”
Forge smiled. Holding Toad’s hand, he replied,
“Toad-ally”
